Superhumanatural spans the career of one of Scotland’s most celebrated and influential contemporary artists, Douglas Gordon. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and then at the Slade School of Fine Art (London) in the mid- to late 80s, and rose to prominence among a generation of Glasgow-trained artists who emerged in the 90s. He has since gone on to achieve international recognition. He has won major awards - including the Turner Prize in 1996, the Hugo Boss Prize in 1998, and the Premio 2000 at the Venice Biennale - and has exhibited in museums and galleries across the world, most recently at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, where several of the works in this exhibition were also shown. He has received worldwide critical acclaim for one of his latest works - Zidane: a 21st Century Portrait - which he made with Philippe Parreno and which premiered at this year's Cannes and Edinburgh Film Festivals.
Superhumanatural will feature some of his best known pieces of work in film, video, photography, text and installation, as well as new pieces created specifically for the show. Most of the works will be shown at the Royal Scottish Academy Building, complemented by a simultaneous exhibition at Inverleith House, the Caledonian Hall and the Wash-House in Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Garden.
